On Friday, Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s new Prime Minister. While he has been a key player in international climate action, the Prime Minister’s first decision–to cancel the consumer carbon tax–was a concession to the fossil fuel industry and the Conservative Party.

This raises a critical question, especially with recent polls confirming that the vast majority of Canadians want climate action and investments in renewables, not fossil fuel development:1 What is Prime Minister Carney’s plan to secure a sustainable, affordable future for all of us?

With an election on the horizon, escalating threats from the U.S., and industry lobbyists pushing to revive dead pipelines in the name of “energy security,” we need to make sure Carney hears from us—loud and clear. Big Oil and Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives are championing an agenda of drastic deregulation, abandoning federal leadership on emissions reductions, and scrapping environmental, social, and governance commitments.2 This would lock us into a burning planet while the rest of the world moves toward a renewable future.

That’s why we’re asking our supporters to send a letter to Prime Minister Carney, calling on him to champion a publicly owned, east-west electricity grid–The People’s Power Grid. You can read the letter and take action here.

As the climate emergency worsens, the cost of living crisis spirals out of control, and U.S. aggression escalates, Canadians need a unifying project that tackles the overlapping crises we’re facing.3

A People’s Power Grid would build strength and resilience for the future by:

✅ Lowering energy costs for Canadians by ensuring access to affordable, publicly owned power.

✅ Strengthening Canada’s economy by providing stable, reliable, and affordable energy to industries and manufacturers across the country, enabling them to scale operations and boost domestic production.

✅ Creating good, sustainable jobs in renewable energy, grid infrastructure, and Canadian manufacturing in communities across the country.

✅ Breaking Big Oil’s monopoly, positioning Canada as a global leader in renewables.

✅ Advancing Indigenous energy sovereignty by supporting Indigenous-led renewable projects.

✅ Reducing dependence on the U.S., strengthening Canada’s energy independence against external political and economic threats.

The climate emergency is here. The election is imminent. Carney’s first move—cancelling the carbon tax—shows he’s vulnerable to pressure from the fossil fuel industry and Conservative demands. We need to push him to seize this moment and deliver a visionary project that meets the urgency of our time.

Send a letter to Prime Minister Carney now. Tell him to secure our economic future and ensure a liveable planet for generations to come.
